Vera Schöpe Llamas is a Spanish-German multimedia artist who uses Photography and other Art media to document questions of  memory, identity and territory, with emphasis on in-situ designs co-created with communities living in borderlands. In her research, she seeks to explore the poetry and politics of shifting hybrid identities in public and private spaces. With her workshops, she ultimately seeks to encourage participants to assert and co-create meaning as they map out their bearings. In her work, she explores the poetry and politics of public and private space. Her city-cartographies are informed by interviews and local histories and are the root of her creative inquiry. 

A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles, France, she has conducted research, produced multimedia installations, and directed intercultural workshops internationally. The aim of her body of work is to establish a point of arrival. She informs her projects with transdisciplinary multidiamedia-based research in History, Geography, and Cultural Studies. She is a passionate community gardener who advocates for food justice and a member of the Climate Action artist collective Earth Creative where she creates and presents scientific research-based artworks, and supports the creation of Science + Climate Education initiatives with and for teachers.

Her work has been exhibited at Le BAL, French Senate, and the Bourse de Travail in Paris, Les Rencontres d’Arles, FOAM Museum, Museum Van Loon, and Maison Descartes in Amsterdam, the FotoGrafia Festival in Rome, the Instituto Reynosense de la Cultura in Tamaulipas and Centro Bellas Artes “Nigromante” in Mexico, the Visual Arts Center in Beijing, China, Atelier de Visu in Marseille, France, and Freemantle Festival in Australia. Her handmade Photography books «U.S. / THEM» and  «FREE FROM» continue to reflect on questions of origin, territory, memory, and nationality. 

Her latest exhibition took place on April 22nd at JR Harris Gallery. It displayed one of her recent bodies of work on native seeds and blooms. Other collaborative research includes air quality and water bodies experimentations in conversation with Burien librarian and Climate activist from Defenders of North SeaTac Forest and Muckleshoot/ Puyallup elder.

Au carrefour de trois nationalités, Vera Schöpe est naturellement conduite à utiliser la photographie et d’autres média pour s'interroger sur la question de l'identité, de la mémoire et du territoire. Après avoir suivi des études en littérature anglaise et relations internationales, elle intègre en 2006 l’École nationale supérieure de la photographie d’Arles. Elle commence alors un projet sur l’appartenance culturelle des individus de la frontière mexicano-américaine intitulé Je suis la frontière, entre Ciudad Juárez (Mexico) et El Paso (Texas). En 2010, elle produit Un Autre Beirut, projet réalisé à partir d’images et d’entretiens où des jeunes libanais redéfinissent la ville de Beirut. Ces projets se développent en tant que expériences collaboratives dans les communautés où ils se réalisent. L’aspect social de ses projets nourrit le contenu et forme finale de projets et se traduit dans des ateliers d’écriture et des échanges multidisciplinaires. Son dernier livre photographique FREE FROM poursuit les notion d’archive et la révision de mémoire.  

En France, son travail a été exposé aux Rencontres d’Arles, au Sénat, La Bourse du Travail (Paris) et à l’Atelier de Visu. À l’étranger il a fait parti des expositions au Fotofreo Festival (Fremantle, Australie), au Festival International FotoGrafia (Rome), à l’Instituto Reynosense para la Cultura y las Artes (Reynosa, Mexique), au FOAM, au Van Loon Museum et à la Maison Descartes (Amsterdam). Ses derniers projets ont eu lieu en Chine, Malaysie, Marroc, Alaska, Hawaii et Pacific Northwest pour explorer des thématiques du changement climatique.
